Welcome to the Aplington Public Library!

Seventy-five years ago, in 1939, a group of community and educationally-minded women had the desire to begin a lending library.

Thus the first library in Aplington was begun by the Woman's Club. Located on the front porch of the home of a club member,Friends Serve Pumpkin Pie Mrs. Kathryn Popkes, many of the books came from the State Traveling Library and the library was operated by volunteers from the Woman's Club.  In 1940 the City of Aplington took over the operation of the library, appropriating money and appointing a library board to oversee its operation.

On Saturday, November 8th from 10 – 1 we celebrated our 75th anniversary. Around 150 people attended our Open House. Pumpkin pie was served by the Friends of the Aplington Library and while the adults enjoyed eating pie and visiting, the children had lots of fun picking out books and playing in the kids’ area.  People also enjoyed the trivia that dated back to 1939 and if you stop by the library you can test your knowledge.  Photos about the history of the library along with books and movies that came out in 1939 are on display. Book bags were handed out and two gift baskets were given away. The winner of the adult gift basket was Lester Johnson and the children's gift basket was won by Ella Buttjer.  Congratulations!
